Yamato Nadeshiko ("Perfect Woman") : Episode Five
Sakurako struggling to get into her burning flat to save her clothes.
++
Sakurako and her team are working on a flight. In the galley, Nami and Aya are chatting with Sakurako about her upcoming wedding and what her dress will look like, but Watabe is keeping her distance (things are kind of awkward between her and Sakurako). Talk diverts to Osuke’s speech at the previous wedding and while they seem to be impressed by it, Sakurako is quite derogatory and belittles what he said about destiny between two people. The others are a bit taken back by her vehemence and the subject is changed to the upcoming JC party, which seems to be a big deal and they’re all very excited, preparing for it. Nami asks Sakurako if she can borrow some of her clothes for the party and Sakurako agrees.
At Sakuma-sensei’s, Osuke is telling his friends about the love hotel incident and Sakuma and Kasuya are convinced that something must have happened between him and Watabe - and Osuke continues to be very bothered by it. Kasuya then tells them about an upcoming student reunion that he’s thinking of going to, and he hopes to find many available women there. Sakuma teases him saying that the women will all be married by this time, but Kasuya retorts that some may be divorced or widowed, and continues to daydream about it.
At Narita airport, Sakurako bumps into an old classmate and is invited to their upcoming student reunion. Sakurako agrees to go, and later in the airport lounge, tells her crewmates about how reunions are a great place to meet guys. Watabe gets up and asks to speak to Sakurako privately and they go up onto the roof, where she tells Sakurako that nothing happened between her and Osuke at the love hotel. Sakurako pretends to be unaffected by it, saying it has nothing to do with her, but then advises Watabe that she is better off looking for a different guy. Watabe insists that Osuke is a good person.
Nami’s at Hanabusa’s hospital, visiting him and they’re talking about Osuke and Watabe - with Hanabusa saying that he thought Osuke was pretty bad for not remembering what happened. Nami comments slyly that if it were Hanabusa, he would remember, right? and adds that she wouldn’t let him forget... This makes Hanabusa uncomfortable and he says he has to work - and that he’s working late tonight so they won’t be able to meet up. Nami is disappointed but after he leaves, she calls Kasuya to meet up that evening.
Higashijujou is driving Sakurako home, and in the car, she tells him about her upcoming student reunion and he comments half-seriously about being worried about the other guys being there, but Sakurako reassures him that she has eyes for only him and no other (!)
Nami and Kasuya go to Alcatraz, a theme restaurant where people get handcuffed and put in cells. They discuss the love hotel incident and speculate on whether Osuke and Watabe had done "it". Kasuya proposes that they go to a love hotel and try it, saying that he would never do anything to Nami. But then hearing this, Nami teases him by replying "then what would be the point..." and then leaves, while he stares beseechingly after her, saying "we can do something..."
As Higashijujou drops Sakurako off in front of "her" apartment block, he asks her if he can come in with her, but she brushes him off, saying that she had arranged for her crewmates to come over. When she gets home, Sakurako finds Nami waiting at her doorstep (to borrow clothes). Once inside, Nami marvels at her beautiful clothes, but at the same time, whether how Sakurako can care so much about what she wears and not care at all about her shabby surroundings. But Sakurako says that a nice home won’t help her bag a guy so what’s the point... and she starts to think instead about what she should wear for JC’s party, saying that she didn’t have anything appropriate. This surprises Nami, since Sakurako has so much clothes, but Sakurako tells her that each of her outfits is only used for one occasion, and they’re not repeated. She starts to pick out outfits and name the occasion that she had worn them at, and comes across the white suit that she had worn to Osuke’s gokon, but she throws the garment down again, saying that was a waste of her effort and money. (She’d spent 500,000 yen on it!) Sakurako also needs to buy a second outfit for the student reunion, telling Nami that different occasions merit different clothes.
Meanwhile, as Osuke is driving back to his shop, he’s still pondering over whether he had done it with Watabe. When he gets there, he finds Watabe all decked out in an apron helping his mom sell fish. He’s clearly disconcerted by this, but his mom is very enthusiastic, as is Watabe and so he’s won over by their enthusiasm and lets her continue with it.
Sakurako times her entrance well at the reunion and as expected, makes a big impact. As the males are all flocking around her, a man arrives and creates a similar stir among the female population. It’s Miyawaki Yuuhi, the owner of a famous boutique chain, Foxy, and the object of her school-girl crush back in the old days. He’s immediately struck by her looks and can’t believe that it’s the same four-eyed girl that used to like him. He makes his way over to her and then using the same trick she does, he "accidentally" spills wine on her and takes her away to get a new change of clothing.
Watabe is at Osuke’s and she tells him the truth about how they didn’t do anything in the love hotel, and he’s visibly relieved. She adds that she has already informed Sakurako as well, but he says that there’s no need. He notices that she’d dirtied her sweater while helping out downstairs in the shop, but she doesn’t seem overly bothered by it.
At the pre-flight briefing, Sakurako is still daydreaming about Miyawaki, and she tells the others how he used to be this big sports hero in school and they wonder how come she wasn’t attracted to him before (they don’t know about her transformation from a gawky schoolgirl and would not be able to fathom a time when she wasn’t able to get her man) and Sakurako simply says that a girl is too young to appreciate the true value of things. They talk about how Foxy’s famous and even has a boutique in New York, but then the chief purser catches them talking and starts to berate them - but Sakurako stands up and delivers a perfect monologue on onflight meal preparation and he’s effectively silenced.
Osuke passes outside a Foxy boutique and notices a pink cardigan similar to Watabe’s in the window. He goes inside and is shocked at how expensive it is. Just then, Sakurako walks in with Miyawaki and seeing him there, she asks him (kind of meanly) if he’s buying a present for Watabe and advises him to get a coat instead, as Watabe already has a lot of sweaters. Miyawaki offers to give him a discount, seeing he’s Sakurako’s friend, but Osuke says that he didn’t bring enough money and leaves. (Poor Osuke!)
Miyawaki offers to make a present of whatever Sakurako chooses in the store and as she is trying on clothes inside the changing room, she overhears the salesgirls gossipping about how Miyawaki is always bringing girls back to the store to impress them and says that Sakurako is prettier than most.
Later, when they leave the store, Sakurako tests Miyawaki by saying that he must have a lot of girls flocking around him all the time but he tells her that he’s too busy with work to meet girls, although it’s lucky he spared the time to go to the reunion because he wouldn’t have met her otherwise. He then uses the line that she always uses at gokons! ("Tatto hitori no hito yatto meguriai ki ga suru" - i.e. that they’re fated to meet)
Osuke’s at Sakuma’s house and he tells his friend in great relief how nothing happened between him and Watabe. Mariko comments that it’s good Watabe also told Sakurako but Sakuma says sceptically that Sakurako probably won’t believe it, so Mariko suggests that Osuke tell Sakurako himself. But Osuke replies that it’s okay and he doesn’t want to have anything to do with a woman who’s engaged but will still date others. Sakuma supports him in his decision, but Mariko looks a bit dubious and asks Osuke if he’s really okay with it.
While Sakurako is at the corner store, the flickering light over her sink catches on fire and her whole house starts to burn down. Osuke passes by and sees a hysterical Sakurako trying to rush in to save her stuff. (Her outfit for the JC party!!) He’s surprised to learn that this is her real home, but seeing her desperation, he volunteers to go in for her. While he’s inside, he gets distracted when he sees the white suit she’d worn to their gokon together, and in the end, he only manages to save that one suit plus the chameleon toy that he’d given her at the hospital.
Osuke takes Sakurako to Sakuma’s house, as she has no other place to stay. (She doesn’t want Higashijujou to know the truth about where she lives and she’s dressed too shabbily for a hotel!) Later that night, Sakurako can’t sleep and she ends up talking with Mariko in the living room. Mariko tells her about how she looks like Osuke’s ex-girlfriend, Yukiko, and recounts their story about how Yukiko had lost this pen that was really precious to her and other guys had offered to buy her a replacement but only Osuke searched day and night for it and in the end, found it for her again. Mariko tells Sakurako that in fact, the pen was given to Yukiko by her parents - which Osuke obviously didn’t know, but he’d understood that there are some important things in this world whose value simply cannot be replaced. Sakurako refuses to show that she’s touched by the story, calling Osuke "baka-mitai", but then later that night, she can’t help tossing and turning and thinking back on past events.
Sakurako gets a call from Miyawaki the next morning and after she tells him about the fire, he sends over a whole new wardrobe! When Osuke arrives at Sakuma’s Sakurako has already gone off to the JC party, and Sakuma tells him that he could have saved himself the effort and not risked his life in a burning house, as this guy has sent over all this stuff to her.
But at the JC party, Sakurako ends up wearing the white suit that she’d worn to Osuke’s gokon and that he’d help her save from the fire...
